House on Fire Ruin
This set of ruins was on my list of things to photograph for a while now. Turns out, you don't ever really just find yourself in SE Utah. I started mapping out all of the spots that I wanted to hit in that area and we finally decided to just go. As ruins go, this is one of the easier one to get to. In fact, it is the first set of ruins on the trail into the South Fork of Mule Canyon.
You can follow the trail in about 4.5 miles to the last set of ruins, but you come across HOF after about a mile. It is is off a spur trail on the right hand side just up a small hill.
You can find the GPS for the Hike: Here.
The best time to photograph this spot is late morning, sometime after 10 or 11am depending on the time of year. The sun crosses over the canyon and illuminates the ceiling of the cave giving it that fire look. We waited and waited, which is not something I do patiently. Most of the time you can find me pacing, marking where the sun is, running around the spot over and over..... Unfortunately, just as the sun was about to be in the right position the clouds rolled over and totally ruined any chance we had at seeing it illuminated. So back it goes on to the list for the next time I happen to find myself in that part of Utah.
